About the MASTA String Camps
The MASTA String Camps are youth string camps held annually in late June at the Walled Lake Outdoor Education Center in Commerce Township, Michigan. They are run by the Michigan Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. The MASTA String Camps provide young string students with the opportunity to have a specialized camp experience on their instrument in a relaxed, fun, and encouraging environment. There are three overnight sessions based on age and playing experience. While at camp students participate in orchestra, sectionals, small ensembles, as well as electives and recreation activities. There are three sessions available to students:
Session 1: June 13-15This is a 3-day/2-night session designed for young string players in their 1st or 2nd year of playing their instrument in a classroom/ensemble setting. Students currently in 4th-6th grade will be successful at this session. This session is also a great first time camp experience for those students who have never attended over-night camp. Students participate in orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, and small rote ensembles, as well as recreation activities throughout the day. On the first day of camp students participate in a rehearsal where their playing skills are assessed by camp staff members so that they may be assigned to an orchestra and rote ensemble based on their skill level.

Session 2 : June 16-18This is a 3-day/2-night session designed for students in their 2nd or 3rd year of playing in a classroom/ensemble setting, currently in 6th through 7th grade.

Session 3: June 20-24This is a 5-day/4-night session designed for the middle-school aged student currently in grades 7-9 participating in an orchestra program. In addition to orchestra and sectionals, students will be assigned to a chamber music ensemble. There is a brief Skills Assessment at the start of camp for students attending this session (Information about the Skills Assessment will be included in the camp information sent out prior to the start of camp). Session III also features a day where campers visit the high ropes course and a daily guitar class!! Students who own their own acoustic guitar are welcome to bring it with them to this session.

"My favorite thing about Masta camp is how small it is and that you get to know a lot of the staff members. I also like all the different activities that we are able to do while at camp." Carey M.
"The counselors are fun, the music is awesome, and I have a blast every time I attend." Steven P.
"MASTA Camp has always been my #1 camp over the summer. I have met some awesome lifelong friends that I talk to almost everyday. I have gone to MASTA three times and I won't hesitate to sign up for year #4. I love everything about the camp. The counselors, the meals, the cabin mates, the camp activities, everything! Thank you MASTA for making the camp so fun for me!" - Haven H.
